An experimental study on the preventive effects of N-acetyl cysteine and ozone treatment against contrast-induced nephropathy

Abstract: The N-acetyl cysteine and ozone treatment may alleviate the biochemical and histopathological deleterious effects of contrast-induced nephropathy via enhancement of total antioxidant capacity and decreasing oxidative stress.

“…Although this condition is in accordance with different studies reporting that APAP induced renal damage is consistent with acute tubular necrosis [41,42] , we conclude that our findings may be due to the beneficial effects of ozone in increasing tissue antioxidant enzyme activity and reducing tissue damage [37] . These results are also in agreement with the findings of a study investigating the protective effect of ozone on the kidneys and reporting its beneficial effects on the regulation of the antioxidant defense system [43] . The main finding of this study is that ozone alone or in combination with L-carnitine decreases tissue MDA levels due to APAP toxicity and increases tissue antioxidant parameter levels.…”

“…MDA content of CIN rats was significantly higher than that of sham rats, while SOD activity was significantly reduced (P < 0:05). Although the pathological mechanism of CIN has not been clearly elucidated, various studies have investigated that oxidative stress is an important cause of CIN [6,44]. The direct toxicity of contrast agents leads to the ROS production, while the oxidative stress caused by the increasing free radicals leads to the apoptosis of renal tubules and glomerular cells [45].…”

“…Previous studies reported that CIN is a complex pathological process related to multiple pathological cascades. Oxidative stress [6,7], renal ischemia [8], endothelial dysfunction [9], inflammation [10,11], apoptosis [12][13][14], and tubular transport dysfunction [15] may be involved in the pathogenesis of CIN. Increasing studies point out that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play the key role in CIN development [16][17][18].…”
