This article aims to analyse the evolution, and current situation, of discourses and policies on cultural diversity in primary schools on both sides of Southern Mediterranean Spain around the Strait of Gibraltar (Andalusia, Murcia, Ceuta and Melilla). To do so, the methodology designed is based on two techniques: documentary analysis of secondary sources (regulations, statistics) and personal interviews with administrative and political personnel from the regional education administration (discourses). Based on the data analysed, the article shows how the arrival of students of foreign origin in the 1990s stimulated education policies of exogenous cultural diversity, whereas endogenous cultural diversity is inherent to historically multicultural societies (‘diversicracy’). The data lead to the conclusion that there is a need to re-politicise educational policy on cultural diversity to promote interculturality based on citizenship rights and social justice, for which a rights-based approach is particularly appropriate.

The objective of this research is to comparatively analyze governance and development between the border areas of Valle Bajo in the US and Valle de Juárez in Mexico, between 2000 and 2020. A descriptive analysis is carried out with information and statistical data from INEGI and Census Bureau with the dimensions of development, that is, economics and sociocultural. Using information from government actors at the three levels of government, it was found that the asymmetries of governance and development between Valle de Juárez and Valle Bajo are due to the distinctive performance of political actors, intervention of institutions in the social and economic dimensions, where the economic vision of the area is mainly agricultural, although the policies are not the same on both sides of the border. It is concluded that the Mexican government has stopped encouraging agriculture in the Valley due to industrial economic visions, adding the corruption of political leaders and violence related to drug trafficking, contributes to low development. On the other hand, the Lower Valley in the US shows better levels where there are more intervening institutions, and there is an incentive from both the federal and state governments to support agriculture.

Impact of armed conflict on land use and land cover changes in global border areas

National borderlands as the spatial carrier and forefront for exerting geopolinomical influence and implementing geopolinomical strategy, most have the same or similar eco-geographical structure characteristics, such as land cover. However, there are different development trends in different national relationships (e.g., cooperation and conflict), and land use and land cover changes (LUCC), especially in apparent in border areas. In general, armed conflict in border areas is accompanied by severe, immediate and long-lasting LUCC-like forest loss. Here, by means of geospatial analysis, the Uppsala Conflict Data Program and Climate Change Initiative Land Cover dataset were used to investigate the linkages between the armed conflict and LUCC or the patterns and processes of LUCC before, during and after armed conflict around the globe in borderlands from 1992 to 2020. The main and key insights are: (1) nearly 50% of global armed conflict has occurred and re-occurred in these borderlands since 1992, leading to about 16.5% of LUCC globally; (2) the impact of armed conflict on LUUC is hysteretic, based on the intensity of conflict, especially in borderlands;(3) the transfer rate of land use is high during the conflict and tends to be stable in the post-conflict period; (4) the absolute amount of armed conflict damage to forest land is large, but the changes rate of impervious surfaces is far more than the former, nearly 18 times greater. These findings improve the understanding of the impact of armed conflict on LUCC, in border areas.
