In vitro anticancer potentials of Lactobacillus plantarum IIA-1A5 and Lactobacillus acidophilus IIA-2B4 extracts against WiDr human colon cancer cell line

Abstract: Colorectal cancer is an emerging public health problem in Indonesia that urges more serious attempts to combat the disease. Previous in vitro studies indicated some probiotics offer promising avenues for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer. Earlier, two Indonesian meat-based probiotics of Lactobacillus plantarum IIA-1A5 and L. acidophilus IIA-2B4, were isolated and exhibited promising functional properties in food fermentation. Nevertheless, their potential anticancer activity has never been exam… Show more

“…The probiotic cultures of L. plantarum IIA-1A5 and L. acidophilus IIA-2B4 were obtained from the IPB University Laboratory of Animal Product Technology collection. Culture propagation was done according to Adiyoga et al [7]. The cultures were inoculated in de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) broth, and incubated for 24 h at 37°C.…”

“…They are regarded as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States [ 10 ]. While consuming live microorganisms in sufficient quantities, they can survive in the host digestive system and produce several advantageous effects on the host, such as providing anti-colorectal cancer effects and preventing inflammatory bowel diseases [ 11 , 12 ], and are commonly referred to as probiotics [ 13 ]. In comparison to traditional injectable vaccines, the administration of probiotic-based mucosal vaccines is easier, safer, and cheaper than traditional injectable vaccines, making them advantageous for mass immunization campaigns, particularly in resource-limited countries [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Traditional treatments include aspirin and nitrozolazole (Brennan et al, 2021) which are treated CRC drug-resistant by inhibiting the Fn, but aspirin damages the gastrointestinal tract, and nitrozolazole causes diarrhea. Probiotic Treatment are attracting attention for their safe, natural and healthy features (Adiyoga et al, 2022;Al-Megrin et al, 2022). Phenyllactic acid (PLA) as a new organic acid metabolized by probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus plantarum (Sun et al, 2019b), which is a kind of small-molecule organic bacteriostatic substance, PLA has a stable structure and can withstand high temperatures.…”
