Vitamin D alleviates skeletal muscle loss and insulin resistance by inducing vitamin D receptor expression and regulating the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway in mice

Abstract: Vitamin D (VD) was reported to play protective roles in skeletal muscle. This study aimed to explore whether endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress inhibition is associated with the protective effects of VD/VD receptor (VDR) signaling on skeletal muscle functions. C2C12 skeletal muscle cells were treated with palmitic acid (PA) and then incubated with different concentrations of 1,25-(OH)2-vitamin D3 (VD3), and we found that VD3 improved the impaired cell viability induced by PA and increased VDR expression in a do… Show more

“…Vitamins are essential nutrients that perform specific and vital functions for health (Zang et al, 2011). Vitamin D can be converted into an active form after ingestion from animal foods (Li et al, 2022). It regulates calcium absorption, serum calcium and phosphorus level to maintain bone structure (Devkate et al, 2019).…”

“…An efficient method for improving muscle growth and strength as well as overall physical performance in older persons is the combination of resistance training and post-exercise protein supplementation (Khor et al, 2022;Velasco et al, 2022). Vitamin D intake is critical for older adults because of its widely recognized links to bone health, muscle strength and function (Li et al, 2022;Prokopidis et al, 2022b;Wang et al, 2022). The predominant form of vitamin D found in circulation is 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (Bollen et al, 2022).…”

“…The damage produced by sepsis to several organs, including the liver, kidney, and lung, is reduced when SIRT1 is activated because it reduces apoptosis, oxidation, and inflammatory ions (Li et al, 2022;Wang et al, 2022b). Numerous neurodegenerative disorders, ischemia damage, and traumatic brain injury have all been linked to SIRT1's neuroprotective effects (Nadtochiy et al, 2011).…”
