Optimization of ultrasound-homogenization combined extraction of phenolics in peony roots and leaves

Abstract: Paeonia ostii is the representative of oil-utilized peony, its roots (PR) and leaves (PL) are discarded as by-products, resulting in a waste of resources. The exploration of extraction process of active ingredients from PR/PL is beneficial to the comprehensive utilization. In this work, the optimum process of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAEo) of total flavonoids content (TFC) from PR and PL was determined by single factor and response surface methodology. The results showed that UAEo was 80 min, 1:5 g/mL, … Show more

“…The R 2 value of the model was 0.9920, which meant that 99.20% of the variation in response values came from the selected variable, meaning that the model was consistent with the experimental results. This indicator is similar to the results of other RSE studies [16]. In addition, the misfitting term was not significant (p = 0.3815 > 0.05), while the Adj R 2 and the Pred R 2 were 0.9818 and 0.9299, and their difference was less than 0.2.…”

“…The TPC of the extract obtained using HG + US reached about 300 mg GAE/g, which is approximately double that of the extract obtained using a single process [15]. Wang et al [16] also extracted phenolic compounds from the roots and leaves of peony using a combined process. The TPCs from the roots and leaves reached about 80 mg GAE/g and 150 mg GAE/g, respectively, values which were about 50% higher than those obtained using a single process.…”

“…A rise in ultrasound temperature did not entirely trigger the enzymatic activity in the ham at lower temperatures, ultimately leading to an increase in ham hardness. At higher temperatures, the loss of water in the muscle protein of ham resulted in less hardness ( 36 ). The increase in ultrasonic power and the amplified cavitation effect of ham caused a loss of internal moisture, leading to a reduction in ham hardness.…”

“…Peony is widely planted in China, and peony seeds contain high omega-3 fatty acids (Qu et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2022). The polysaccharides extracted from peony seed dreg displayed high anti-oxidant (Shi et al, 2016a;Shi et al, 2016b;Zhang et al, 2022), and anti-cancerous properties (Zhang et al, 2017).…”
