Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism in psoriasis in southern Turkey

Abstract: BackgroundPsoriasis is a multigenic and multifactorial dermatological disease linked to cardiovascular diseases. Increased levels of homocysteine in patients with psoriasis have been demonstrated in many studies. The most frequently investigated genetic defect that plays a role in homocysteine metabolism is single point substitution (C to T) located on the 677th nucleotide of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR).ObjectiveIn this study, we aimed to investigate methylenetetrahydrofolate C677T pol… Show more

“…due to inhibited metabolism of this amino acid present in this group of patients. Izmirli et al [31] proved that in the case of Turkish population, psoriatic patients show a higher frequency of the occurrence of polymorphism in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase which takes part in homocysteine metabolism. On the other hand, it is known that in the case of Turkish population, the homocysteine level is not usually increased in psoriasis.…”

“…In China, where the first study on the subject was conducted, the prevalence of TT genotype was found to be high in patients with psoriasis (n=39) 37 . Similarly, the prevalence of T allele containing genotypes was found to be significantly higher in psoriatic patients in Hatay (n=96) and in Iran (n=100) compared to controls 36,48 . It was shown in a study conducted in Istanbul in 60 patients without a control group that the blood homocysteine levels were high in the psoriatic patients with TT and CT genotypes 47 .…”

“…The prevalence of MTHFR C677T polymorphism ranges between 20% and 55% in various populations 47 . The MTHFR C677T polymorphism in psoriasis patients has been studied in Turkey (47,48), Iran (36), China (37), Malaysia (49), Czech Republic (50), and in Australia (51) and different results have been obtained as was the case in blood homocysteine levels. In China, where the first study on the subject was conducted, the prevalence of TT genotype was found to be high in patients with psoriasis (n=39) 37 .…”

“…Izmirli et al . [ 70 ] generated a psoriasis-specific gene library to screen for MTHFR C677T polymorphism using 96 psoriasis cases and 77 controls from Southern Turkey. They found 34 CC (35.4%), 46 CT (47.9%), and 16 TT (16.7%) genotypes in the psoriasis group, while the respective figures were 39 (50.6%), 35 (45.5%), and 3 (3.9%) in the control group.…”
