Leprosy among children under 15 years of age: literature review

Abstract: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, representing a public health issue in some countries. Though more prevalent in adults, the detection of new cases in children under 15 years of age reveals an active circulation of bacillus, continued transmission and lack of disease control by the health system, as well as aiding in the monitoring of the endemic. Among patients under 15 years of age, the most affected age group is children between 10 and 14 years of age, although cases of… Show more

“…Leprosy can occur at any age between infants to the elderly (Ministry of Health RI, 2012). The discovery of leprosy cases in children and adolescents shows active bacillus circulation which allows transmission to the healthy people and the failure of the health system to control leprosy (Oliveira & Diniz, 2016). In this study, it was shown that there was no influence between gender and new cases of leprosy.…”

“…Due to the long incubation period, leprosy is considered to be an adult disease (3) . But in endemic sites, children, considered the most resistant group, become vulnerable as a result of being continually exposed to active transmission foci (13) . Thus, evaluating the occurrence of the disease in children under 15 years is important since this indicator reflects the intensity of propagation of Mycobacterium leprae and the impact of the control actions (14) , as illness in this age group involves recent transmission (15) .…”
