Traumatic neuroma of the penis after circumcision - Case report

Abstract: Traumatic neuromas are tumors resulting from hyperplasia of axons and nerve sheath cells after section or injury to the nervous tissue1. We present a case of this tumor, confirmed by anatomopathological examination, in a male patient with history of circumcision. Knowledge of this entity is very important in achieving the differential diagnosis with other lesions that affect the genital area such as condyloma acuminata, bowenoid papulosis, lichen nitidus, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, achrochordon and pearly pe… Show more

“…Traumatic neuroma involves the regenerative proliferation of injured or traumatized nerve fibers. A palisade-encapsulated neuroma is a hamartomatous proliferation of nerve tissue with no apparent preceding injury 2 . Traumatic neuromas are characterized clinically as solid papules or nodules, and the surgical scars or amputated lesions are skin colored or erythematous-purplish in appearance 2 .…”

“…The normal reparative process of the damaged nerve is disrupted leading to a disorganised exuberant proliferation of axons and nerve sheath cells. 22 When found on the penis they are commonly associated with unintended nerve injury during circumcision but may occur following any form of trauma. Histologically, these non-neoplastic lesions show a disorganised proliferation of nerve fascicles, Schwann cells and fibroblasts normally encased within a collagenous or myxoid stroma ( Figure 6) with varying degrees of background chronic inflammation.…”

“…Traumatic neuromas are nerve sheath tumors in which the ratio of axons to Schwann cell fascicles is approximately equal 56,57. The condition results from regenerative proliferation of traumatized or injured nerve fibers 56,57.…”
