Determination of the force systems produced by different configurations of tear drop orthodontic loops

Abstract: In general, teardrop loops with helix produced lower magnitudes of horizontal force and load/deflection ratio, and higher moment/force ratio than teardrop loops without helix. Among all analyzed variables, metal alloy composition presented greater influence in the horizontal force and in the load/deflection ratio. The moment/force ratio showed to be more influenced by the preactivation of loops for space closure.

“…Beta titanium is less stiff than stainless steel which has been demonstrated by numerous studies. 6,[9][10][11][12][13] The 0.019" × 0.025" wire dimensions produced more force and load deflection rate than 0.017" × 0.025" (Tables 3 and 4, Graph 1). The 0.019" × 0.025" produced approximately 1.4 times more force than 0.017" × 0.025" wire dimensions.…”

“…There are various techniques for carrying out this clinical procedure, and proper selection can affect the outcome of the treatment. Two basic techniques that differ in biomechanics are closing loops and sliding mechanics [8].Closing loops are incorporated into the archwire design and transmit force over it to close the space without any friction [9]. Sanjay et al stated that the closure of postextraction spaces without friction, while producing continuous forces, was the biggest advantage of a loop [10].…”

“…Additionally, it produces lighter forces. 13 , 20 Nevertheless, it is more sensitive in addition to being influenced by factors that hinder sliding of orthodontic archwires, such as friction, less torque control of anterior teeth and overbite. 21 Adding more torque on the orthodontic archwire and using brackets with greater torque are recommended to control tipping of incisors.…”
