Assessment of shear bond strength of brackets bonded by direct and indirect techniques: an in vitro study

Abstract: Objective: This in vitro study was designed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic metal brackets bonded by direct and indirect techniques. Methods: Thirty healthy human maxillary premolar teeth were used. The teeth were divided into three groups of 10 teeth each: Group I -indirect bonding with Sondhi™ Rapid-Set system (3M/Unitek), Group II -indirect bonding with Transbond™ XT adhesive system (3M/Unitek) and Group III -direct bonding with Trans-bond™ XT adhesive system (3M/Unitek). After bondi… Show more

“…However, clinical experience and experimental studies have shown Transbond XT system provide excellent results when associated to this technique. The study by Shimizu et al 13 supports this finding by stating that Sondhi Rapid Set and Transbond XT Primer systems displayed similar shear bond strength after the indirect method was employed.…”

“…Select and apply adhesive to tooth surface and bracket base, following the manufacturer's instructions. Clinical experience and in vitro studies 13 , 14 have demonstrated satisfactory results when Transbond XT Primer adhesive (3M Unitek) is used for direct orthodontic bonding. A thin layer of material should be applied to the etched tooth surface, followed by gentle air spray and reapplication ( Fig 15A ).…”

“…Clinical experiences and experimental studies have shown that Transbond XT™ system provides excellent results when associated to indirect bonding technique (Nojima et al 2015;Bolya et al 2017). Authors have reported this system is very effective in tensile and shear bond strength and failure rate, when compared to other adhesives (Shimizu et al 2012). In addition, Transbond XT™ presents similar behavior when used in direct or indirect bonding techniques, being able of reaching the same clinical efficiency when the indirect bonding technique is performed properly (Menini et al 2014;Tessore et al 2017;Demirovic et al 2018;Sharma et al 2018).…”
