ObjectiveDetermine the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) (p = 0.032) habits (p = 0.014) Results 84.5% of individuals showed a degree of auto-reported dysfunction. RESUMOObjetivo: Determinar a prevalência das DTM em graduandos de Odontologia da Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa. Materiais e Métodos: Foram examinados 153 estudantes de todos os períodos, com idades entre 17 e 25 anos. Foram excluídos os graduandos em tratamento ortodôntico e aqueles com doenças sistêmicas graves, tais como neoplasias. Para determinação da prevalência e obtenção do diagnóstico das DTM foi utilizada uma ficha clínica composta por questionário de saúde e exame físico detalhados. Durante o exame físico, foi realizada a palpação bidigital e auscultação das articulações temporomandibulares, bem como a análise dos movimentos mandibulares e da amplitude de abertura bucal. Também foi realizada a palpação bidigital dos músculos mastigatórios e associados. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste Qui-quadrado (χ 2 ) ao nível de significância de 99% (α=0,01). Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que 39% dos graduandos apresentaram algum tipo de DTM (p=0,004), sendo que 73% eram do gênero feminino (p<0,001). Foi observada uma porcentagem de 93% de desordens articulares e 7% de desordens musculares, tendo sido 78% isoladas e 22% associadas (p<0,001). A DTM articular mais prevalente, independente do gênero, foi o deslocamento do disco com redução (68%) (p<0,001). Conclusão: A partir da análise dos dados, concluiu-se que quase metade dos pacientes avaliados apresentou algum tipo de DTM e que a grande maioria foi do gênero feminino. Além disso, observou-se que a DTM articular foi a mais prevalente. Descritores: Transtornos da articulação temporomandibular. O paciente pode queixar-se também de dor na mandíbula, dor de cabeça, ruído na articulação, dificuldade para abrir e fechar a boca e dificuldade na mastigação 5 . Os sinais e sintomas das DTM podem, ainda, estar associados a outras condições clínicas, como cefaléias, enxaquecas, dores no segmento cervical e hábitos parafuncionais, como o bruxismo e suas possíveis implicações, além das alterações comportamentais e fatores psicossociais 6 .A etiologia das DTM é multifatorial, podendo estar relacionada ao estresse, tensão emocional, interferências oclusais, perda de contenção posterior, alterações posturais, hábitos parafuncionais, alterações extrínsecas ou intrínsecas das articulações ou a combinação de fatores 7 . Além disso, a mastigação unilateral, deficiência nutricional e fatores sistêmicos podem contribuir para o aparecimento das DTM 8 . The physiotherapy approach aims at the pain relief and the functional recovery by means of several modalities. Objective: To investigate the effects, short and medium-term, of a multimodal physiotherapeutic approach on TMD diagnosis and severity. Methodology: Individuals with diagnosis of TMD, confirmed by the Axis I of the RDC/TMD, took part in the study. From this evaluation, the Temporomandibular Index (TMI) and its sub-indices were calculated. The participants were treated during ten sessions of physiotherapy, which included therapeutic ultrasound, thermotherapy, manual therapy, stretching and neuromuscular exercises, as well as self-care and home exercises instructions. Assessments were carried out before treatment (AV1), immediately after treatmentFisioter Mov. 2014 abr/jun;27(2):219-27Freire AB, De Nardi AT, Boufleur J, Chiodelli L, Pasinato F, Corrêa ECR. 220 (AV2) and two months after the end of the treatment (AV3). The values of indices and the diagnosis prevalence were compared between the different periods by the t paired test (p < 0.05). Results: The number of diagnoses reduced in all the subgroups and 41.7% of the 24 participants presented no diagnosis after the treatment. A significant decrease in the TMI was observed between AV1 and AV2 (p = 0.000). There was no difference between AV2 and AV3 (p = 0.204) in 13 participants assessed two months after the end of the treatment. Conclusion: The multimodal physiotherapeutic approach resulted in positive effects, short and medium-term, on the symptoms and clinical signs, with deletion of the dysfunction or reduction of its severity in treated patients.[
