Assessment of mutagenic and antimutagenic effects of Punica granatum in mice

Abstract: In the present study, the ability of Punica granatum ethanolic leaf extract (PGL) and Punica granatum ethanolic fruit extract (PGF) to induce mutagenicity or to modulate the genotoxic effects induced by the alkylating agent cyclophosphamide (CP) was evaluated. Swiss male mice were treated by gavage for 10 days with PGL or PGF (12.5, 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg/day) prior to exposure to CP (i.p. 200 mg/kg), 24 h after the end of the treatment. Initial observations revealed that normal mice treated with both extracts (… Show more

“…TBARS results are dose-dependent (Horn et al 2016). TBARS was significantly increased in mice liver exposed to 25 mg kg -1 of CP for 10 days (Zarei and Shivanandappa 2013), also in mice 24 hours after having been administrated one dose of 200 mg kg -1 CP (Valadares et al 2010), and in the kidney of rats exposed to 27 mg kg -1 CP administered four times in ten weeks (Kocahan et al 2017). In a test of rutin as a potential inhibitor of the oxidative stress caused by CP, the levels of lipid peroxidation also remained unchanged (Nafees et al 2015).…”

“…Twenty-four hours after MMC applications, the femoral bones of the mice were removed by cervical dislocation under ether anesthesia. Test concentrations (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) were determined considering the lower and upper limit ranges used in previous studies [24][25][26].…”

“…The pomegranate is an infructescence of the pomegranate (Punica granatum), this species is capable of promoting post-implantation abortion (PROMPROM, et al, 2010;MEMARZADEH, et al, 2015). However, it does not have mutagenic potential (VALADARES et al, 2010;ÁVILA et al, 2013). It is suggested the prenatal intake of pomegranate juice due to its fetoprotective action (CHEN, et al, 2012; CHEN, LONGTINE and NELSON, 2013).…”
