The ∼430-My-old Herefordshire, United Kingdom, Lagerstätte has yielded a diversity of remarkably preserved invertebrates, many of which provide fundamental insights into the evolutionary history and ecology of particular taxa. Here we report a new arthropod with 10 tiny arthropods tethered to its tergites by long individual threads. The head of the host, which is covered by a shield that projects anteriorly, bears a long stout uniramous antenna and a chelate limb followed by two biramous appendages. The trunk comprises 11 segments, all bearing limbs and covered by tergites with long slender lateral spines. A short telson bears long parallel cerci. Our phylogenetic analysis resolves the new arthropod as a stem-group mandibulate. The evidence suggests that the tethered individuals are juveniles and the association represents a complex brooding behavior. Alternative possibilities-that the tethered individuals represent a different epizoic or parasitic arthropod-appear less likely.arthropod | Silurian | brood care | juvenile | Herefordshire Lagerstätte

Background By comparing spatial geographical structures of host populations with that of their symbionts light can be shed on their biological interactions, and the degree of congruence between host and symbiont phylogeographies should reflect their life histories and especially dispersal mechanisms. Methods Here, we analyzed the genetic diversity and structure of a host, the blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus, and its symbiotic pedunculate barnacle Octolasmis angulata from six location sites representing three geographic regions (north, central and south) along the Vietnam coastline. High levels of congruence in their phylogeographic patterns were expected as they both undergo planktonic larval stages. Results Based on the COI mtDNA markers, O. angulata populations showed higher genetic diversity in comparison with their host P. pelagicus (number of haplotype/individuals, haplotype and nucleotide diversity are 119/192, 0.991 ± 0.002 and 0.02; and 89/160, 0.913 ± 0.02 and 0.015, respectively). Pairwise Fst and AMOVA analyses showed a more pronounced population structure in the symbiotic barnacle than in its crab host. The DAPC analyses identified three genetic clusters. However, both haplotype networks and scatter plots supported connectivity of the host and the symbiotic barnacle throughout their distribution range, except for low subdivision of southern population. Isolation by distance were detected only for the symbiont O. angulata (R2 = 0.332, P = 0.05), while dbMEM supported spatial structure of both partners, but only at MEM-1 (Obs. 0.2686, P < 0.01 and Obs. 0.2096, P < 0.01, respectively).

Lobster pasir, Panulirus homarus adalah salah satu komoditas perikanan yang memiliki nilai ekonomis tinggi, baik di pasar lokal maupun internasional. Akan tetapi, dalam usaha pembesaran lobster terdapat hambatan yaitu tingginya mortalitas yang disebabkan oleh infeksi penyakit. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan penelitian ini dengan tujuan untuk melakukan investigasi penyakit pada pembesaran lobster pasir P. homarus di tiga lokasi karamba jaring apung (KJA). Metode penelitian meliputi pengambilan sampel lobster, pengamatan parasit, isolasi bakteri dan jamur, serta deteksi Milky Hemolymph Disease of Spiny Lobster (MHD-SL) melalui analisis Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Lokasi pengambilan sampel meliputi Lombok (NTB), Pangandaran (Jabar) dan teluk Pegametan (Bali) dengan sampel lobster masing-masing sebanyak 5 ekor. Tiga ekor lobster dari Pangandaran terinfeksi parasit Octolasmis sp. yang menginfeksi terutama pada lamela insang. Satu sampel lobster dari Lombok terinfeksi jamur Fusarium sp. yang merupakan penyebab penyakit black gill disease dengan gejala insang yang menghitam. Dua lobster dari Lombok dan 1 lobster dari Pegametan terinfeksi oleh MHD-SL yang ditandai dengan hemolimfa berwarna putih susu.
