Responses of wild titi monkeys, Callicebus coimbrai (Primates: Platyrrhini: Pitheciidae), to the habituation process

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Adequate habituation of free-ranging subjects is essential for any field study, but is generally unsystematic. Here, attempts to habituate three titi monkey (Callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth, 1999) groups are described, and factors determining the effectiveness of the process are discussed. The "relentless pursuit" approach was aided by playback recordings of vocalizations but only one group was habituated adequately. Average contact in 13 encounters with group 1 was just over one minute, whe… Show more

“…The study group originally consisted of an adult pair, a subadult male, and a juvenile, which were fully habituated [Souza-Alves & Ferrari, 2010] to the Heiduck, 2002;Palacios et al, 1997]. The study group was monitored from dawn to dusk on four or five consecutive days each month between July 2009 and June 2010, with a total of 58 days (550 hr) of observation.…”

“…We collected faecal samples from five squirrel monkey groups (60 individuals, SD = 45) monitored between May and September 2016 (10 days/month) after the habituation process based on intensive pursuit [Souza-Alves and Ferrari, 2010] (October to December, 2015). We monitored the individuals from dawn (05.00 h) to dusk (18.00 h), totaling 600 h. We used small wooden scoops to collect the faecal samples and stored them in Falcon tubes containing silica gel to avoid fungal infestation.…”
