A new Scinax of the S. catharinae species group from Central Brazil (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae)

Abstract: A new species of Scinax Wagler, 1830 belonging to the S. catharinae species group is described from the state of Goiás, in the Cerrado Biome, Brazil. Scinax skaios sp. nov. is characterized by short snout-vent length (males ranging 23.2-29.6 mm; females 30.7- 36.1 mm), snout subovoid in dorsal view and protruding in lateral view; no tubercle on canthus rostralis; an inverted triangular interorbital blotch; no externally expanded vocal sac; dorsal skin texture moderately rugose; absence of a thick externally we… Show more

“…Scinax sp. (Scinax catharinae clade) was found in riparian forest of streams and lentic environments near forest edges, in general these species are gallery forest dwellers that use marginal vegetation bordering streams (Lutz 1973;Lourenço et al 2009;Pombal et al 2010;Leite et al 2013). Scinax fuscomarginatus has been already found in temporary and permanent ponds near to forest edges and in open areas.…”

“…Scinax is currently the largest genus in the family Hylidae with 112 recognized species (Frost, ; Lourenço et al ., ), and more new species are being described frequently (e.g. 14 new species described in the last three years: Cardoso & Pombal, ; Lourenço, Nascimento & Pires, ; Faivovich, Gasparini & Haddad, ; Nunes, Carvalho & Pereira, ; Nunes & Pombal, , ; Pombal et al ., , ; Cruz, Nunes & De Lima, ; De Lima, Cruz & de Azevedo, ; Silva & Alves‐Silva, ; Lacerda, Peixoto & Feio, ; Nunes, Kwet & Pombal, ). The last phylogenetic assessment of this genus revealed two main clades, the Scinax catharinae clade, including the S. catharinae and Scinax perpusillus groups, and the Scinax ruber clade, including the Scinax rostratus and Scinax uruguayus groups, and 43 species not being assigned to any of the previous groups (Faivovich et al ., ).…”

“…The treefrog Bokermannohyla circum data always inhabits stream habitats in the Atlantic Rain Forest (Napoli 2005), where the species uses the herbaceous vegetation to breed, and its tadpoles develop in the small rivulets and flooded adjacent areas (Napoli 2000). Species of the Scinax catharinae Group typically are forest dwellers (Pombal et al 2010); thus, it is not surprising Scinax sp. 2, a member of this species group, is restricted to the densest forest patches of the PESP with lotic environments.…”
