Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), such as Trichostrongylidae, are important pathogens in small ruminants, causing significant losses in these livestock species. Despite their veterinary importance, GINs have not been studied in certain regions of the world. Therefore, much of their epidemiology and economic impact on production remain unknown. In the present study, a systematic epidemiological survey based on the modified McMaster technique was conducted to investigate the type and infection of GINs in sheep and cattle. In 9622 fecal samples from 491 sampling sites in the four main banner districts of Ordos, the prevalence of GIN infection was found to be 38.84% and 4.48% in sheep and cattle, respectively. At the same time, the effects of four pasture types on the distribution of GINs were analyzed. This study also found severe resistance to ivermectin and albendazole in GINs and suspected anthelmintic resistance in nitroxynil, levamisole and closantel. We report the type and infection of GINs in Ordos, with the aim to help the prevention and control of GINs. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey and GIN resistance test, we found several reasons for the anthelmintic resistance of GINs, consequently providing new ideas for controlling the occurrence of anthelmintic resistance.

The severe use of anthelmintics to control gastrointestinal nematodes has become an essential issue in many countries, especially related to resistance issues. A study was carried out to determine the anthelmintic resistance status of intestinal nematodes of sheep, which were kept intensively in Bogor District, Indonesia. A total of 220 sheep of 7 breeds that routinely received Benzimidazole anthelmintics group to control gastrointestinal nematode were designated for this study. The animals were divided into 7 groups based on the breed and treated with Albendazole at the required dose. The Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) method was used to evaluate the anthelmintic’s effectiveness. The mean fecal egg count reduction was recorded at seven and fourteen days of treatment. The result indicated that 7 breeds of sheep were resistant to the anthelmintic used. Garut Local and Barbados Cross breeds showed relatively high resistance to Albendazole, with the mean fecal egg count at fourteen days of treatment being 60.24% and 67.97%, respectively. Haemonchus spp. larvae were the nematode larvae of strongyles species that grew the most in each breed of sheep from the fecal samples on day 0 (before treatment), day 7, and day 14 after treatment.

This study evaluated the economic impact of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in Morada Nova lambs under different parasite chemical control conditions. For this, 246 lambs, in the rainy and dry season, were randomized into groups according to their anthelmintic treatment with levamisole: control (CT: no treatment); routine treatment (RT: treated every 42 days); and targeted selective treatment (TST: treated according to the average daily weight gain, DWG). From 63 days of age (D63) to D210, the lambs were weighed and monitored for GIN infection parameters. Spending on anthelmintics in the production system was 1.3% of the total economic result. The economic result per animal (R$ 5.00 = US$ 1.00) was higher in the RT group, amounting to US$ 6.60 in the rainy and US$ 5.69 in the dry season, due to higher DWG. Thus, RT presented economic results 14.4% and 10.9% higher than CT, and 7.2% and 1.9% higher than TST, in the rainy and dry season, respectively. However, fast development of resistance made RT unfeasible. Here, the economic impact of GIN infection on a national scale is discussed, demonstrating its importance and the impossibility of profitable and sustainable sheep production without adequate control.
