BACKGROUNDThe shortcomings of synthetic pesticides are becoming increasingly evident. In the pursuit of looking for alternative, environmentally friendly pesticides, the potential use of two naturally occurring sesquiterpenes, α‐bisabolol and bisabolol oxide A, as bactericides or acaricides, was investigated against three gram‐positive and three gram‐negative bacteria, and the eggs and larvae of the cattle tick Hyalomma scupense, respectively. The primary targeted site of synthetic insecticides is acetylcholinesterase (AChE), so the inhibitory activity of both sesquiterpenes was evaluated. Then, molecular docking and molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM‐GBSA) studies were performed to gain insight into their binding mode in the AChE active site.RESULTSBisabolol oxide A showed good activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteritidis with inhibition zones ranging from 16 to 34 mm and minimal inhibitory concentration (CIM) of 3.125 mg mL−1. Ovicidal and larvicidal assays revealed promising activity of α‐bisabolol and bisabolol oxide A against H. scupense, with bisabolol oxide A being more effective against larval ticks with lethal concentration (LC50) value of 0.78%. Both compounds also displayed potent anti‐AChE activity with inhibition concentration (IC50) values of 37.09 and 28.14 μg mL−1, respectively. Furthermore, α‐bisabolol and bisabolol oxide A exhibited good and comparable docking scores (−7.289 and −7.139 Kcal mol−1, respectively) and were found to accommodate in the active‐site gorge of AChE via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions.CONCLUSIONBisabolol oxide A and, to a lesser degree, α‐bisabolol are active against bacteria and ectoparasites and may represent an economical and sustainable alternative to toxic synthetic pesticides to control pathogens. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The present study aims to evaluate the nutritional value of different tree and shrub leaves in Brazilian ruminant production systems. Eight potentially edible trees and shrubs were identified from interviews with 30 ruminant producers: Aroeira (ARO; Lithraea molleoides), Black Mulberry (BMU; Morus nigra), Candeia (CAN; Eremanthus erythropappus), Jatobá (JAT; Hymenaea courbaril), Gliricídia (GLI; Gliricidia sepium), Santa Bárbara tree (SBT; Mélia azedarach), Tithonia (TIT; Tithonia diversifolia), and White Mulberry (WMU; Morus alba). Four leaf samples of each edible tree were sampled, and chemical analyses and in vitro assays were performed. Edible trees (except CAN and JAT) had lower neutral detergent fiber content than Mombasa grass. In addition, SBT, BMU, WMU, and TIT had lower fiber content than the other evaluated edible trees. Consequently, SBT, TIT, BMU, and WMU had improved dry matter degradation. Among the edible trees and shrubs, SMW and WMU increased the potential for gas production (a parameter). On the other hand, CAN decreased the estimated gas production 48 h after incubation. Furthermore, TIT decreased methane production up to 24 h after in vitro fermentation. Thus, except ARO, CAN, and JAT, the edible trees evaluated in the present study are potential feeds in moderate- to high-producing animals. Additionally, TIT fermentation reduces in vitro methane production.

Habitat fragmentation and management of natural populations of tree species may interfere with their dynamics of reproduction. Eremanthus erythropappus is a native pioneer tree from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest as well as their transition zones, that usually reproduces by sexual means, that is producing seeds, but can also induce propagules through assexual propagation. Management of natural populations of E. erythropappus for their use in cosmetics and other industrial applications, however, threaten the species survival and may alter the reproduction patterns of the species. Here we used six microsatellite loci to investigate whether management of a natural stand increased clonality rates in comparison to an unmanaged area. Significant increase in clonality levels, as detected from multilocus genotypes, were observed in the managed stand, although some clonality was also detected in the unmanaged area. Through the interpretation of the richness index (R), managed regenerants showed higher levels of clonality (R = 0.293), followed by managed adults (R = 0.489). Significant aggregation was also detected, indicating that closer individuals in distance could also be identical genotypes. The association index revealed some extent of linkage disequilibrium generated by clonality. Therefore, our data showed that clonality rates are significantly augmented when E. erythropappus is subjected to management. This may have further negative impact on the genetic diversity of natural populations of the species and for its long term conservation in their environment of origin. Management practices should take into account the extent of clonality they can induce in natural stands of the species.
