Efficacy of a commercial fungal formulation containing Duddingtonia flagrans (Bioverm®) for controlling bovine gastrointestinal nematodes

Abstract: Bioverm® (Duddingtonia flagrans) is a fungal formulation indicated for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants and horses, which has recently been authorized for commercialization in Brazil. The objective was to determine the efficiency of Bioverm® against larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle. Twelve animals were used, divided into two groups. In the treated group, a single dose of 1 g of Bioverm® per 10 kg of live weight (containing 105 ch… Show more

“…To date, D. flagrans has been viewed as a good controller of trichostrongylides and cyathostome (the most prevalent GINs in livestock) in various domestic animals (Table 1). Bioverm®, a fungal formulation that contains chlamydospores of D. flagrans, has been licensed for commercialization in Brazil [17,47].…”

“…In the last five years, commercial formulations containing D. flagrans started became commercially available. In Brazil (Bioverm ® -AC001, GhenVet Saúde Animal, Paulínia, Brazil), Australia, and New Zealand (BioWorma ® -NCIMB 30336, BioWorma, Sydney, Australia), these products are already used, with administration in animal feed [8,[11][12][13][14].…”

“…It has been proven that after oral administration of D. flagrans (AC001-Bioverm ® , GhenVet Saúde Animal, Paulínia, Brazil), at a dosage of 1 g/10 kg of body weight (10 5 chlamydospores/g), there was fungal survival after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of sheep and cattle, with efficient larval predation in vitro [8,14]. Under field conditions, the daily administration of Bioverm ® for six months demonstrated a significant parasitic reduction in cattle and horses in Brazil [12,13].…”

“…In Brazil, there is a commercially available product based on the fungus D. agrans (Bioverm®). The effectiveness (in vitro) of Bioverm® was reported against gastrointestinal nematodes of different animal species, such as horses (Fausto et al, 2021); sheep (Braga et al, 2020) and cattle (Rodrigues et al, 2021). Among cattle, the e cacy of the product for controlling verminosis in the eld, in the central-western region, has also been described (Oliveira et al, 2021).…”
