Molecular detection of Mycoplasma suis in extensive pig production systems in the State of Maranhão, northeast Brazil

Abstract: Mycoplasma suis is a bacterium that causes hemoplasmosis in pigs. This agent is capable of adhering to the surface of porcine erythrocytes, inducing structural changes on these cells. In Brazil, there are few reports about the disease, its causal agent, and the economic impact of this pathogen on pig production systems and farm sanitation. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of M. suis in extensive swine farms located in the counties of Itapecuru Mirim, Santa Rita and Rosario, State of Maranh… Show more

“…Quantitative PCR results showed that more than 80% of the positive animals presented PH loads between 10 − 1 and 10 4 copies/μL, corroborating previous studies conducted in Brazil [ 15 , 17 , 18 , 31 ]. PHs tend to establish chronic infections with nonclinical presentations in pigs [ 6 , 35 ].…”

“…Even though PHs have been reported in the intensive [ 18 , 31 ] and extensive [ 15 , 17 ] pig production systems in Brazil, the influence of these agents on productive swine performance has not been assessed. Therefore, this body of work investigated the occurrence of PH and its association with average daily weight gain (ADWG) in finishing pigs from a commercial farm in Brazil.…”

“…(2019) that have found an occurence of 76.19% and 54.7%, respectively. However, both studies (Martins et al., 2019; Toledo et al., 2016) analysed samples from extensive and non‐technified farms, without adequate nutritional programmes, facilities, defined genetics, and standardized management techniques.…”

“…Similarly, Martins et al. (2019) detected 54.7% occurrence in extensive pig farms from Rio Grande do Norte State, which raises questions about the situation of HMs occurrence in technified farms in Brazil, the fourth biggest pork producer in the world (United States Department of Agriculture, 2020).…”
