Nematode capilaridae in the tongue of Cerdocyon thous of free life in Brazil

Abstract: Studies of helminths in road-killed wild animals are still uncommon but may provide promising results since they can identify the parasites in juvenile and adult hosts and meet the recommendations of current discussions on bioethics that prioritize alternative methods for the use of animals. This study evaluated three Cerdocyon thous individuals that were donated after dying from being run over. Two of them had small nematode adults in the epithelial and connective tissues of the tongue. The diagnosis was base… Show more

“…The nematode Pterygodermatites parasitizes wild mammals with subgenus P. (Multipectines) parasitizing wild carnivores worldwide and P. (Paucipectines) being found in Neotropical rodents (Anderson et al, 2009). The former subgenus has been recorded in Neotropical canids such Crab-eating fox (Lima et al, 2013;Pinheiro et al, 2018) and other species from North America (Seesee et al, 1983). Considering that the retrieved worm corresponded to an immature female, it is difficult to attribute it to a subgenus.…”

“…In South America, S. lupi and Spirocerca sp. have been recorded in Crab-eating fox and domestic dogs from Brazil (Vicente et al, 1997;Pinheiro et al, 2018) and Andean fox from Peru (Gomez-Puerta et al, 2018). However, in Europe, red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are host for a different species, Spirocerca vulpis (Rojas et al, 2018).…”

“…Tamandua tetradactyla is a common species in all Brazilian biomes (Desbiez and Medri 2010). It is one of the most frequently roadkilled animals in southeastern Brazil, and studies of the impacts caused by the road network and resident fauna have enabled access to previously unavailable data (Bernegossi et al 2018), such parasites (Pinheiro et al 2018), diseases (Muñoz-García et al 2018), and food preferences (Gallo et al 2017) . The analysis of contents in the digestive system of roadkilled animals shows how carcasses can be used to generate information on the biology and feeding habits of this species.…”

“…In Brazil, helminth fauna studies in recent years have not identified Gonglyonema spp. in wild carnivoran hosts (Corrêa et al 2016; Vieira et al 2017; da Silva Pinheiro et al 2018; de Almeida et al 2019; Corrêa et al 2019; Moraes et al 2019). There are no previous published data on Gongylonema spp.…”
