Predatory activity of Butlerius nematodes and nematophagous fungi against Haemonchus contortus infective larvae

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predatory activity of the nematode Butlerius spp. and fungal isolates of Duddingtonia flagrans, Clonostachys rosea, Arthrobotrys musiformis and Trichoderma esau against H. contortus infective larvae (L 3 ) in grass pots. Forty-eight plastic gardening pots containing 140 g of sterile soil were used. Panicum spp. grass seeds (200 mg) were sown into each pot and individually watered with 10 mL of tap water. Twelve days after seeding, the pots were randomly divided int… Show more

“…In an extensive review of the available literature, only a few records on the predatory activity of predatory nematodes on animal parasitic nematodes were found relating to Butlerius sp. [7,20,25]. It is interesting that in a similar experiment published by da Silva et al [7], the interaction between Butlerius sp.…”

“…Nematodes of the different taxa groups were recovered transferring the faecal culture material using the Baermann funnel technique [7]. Quantification of nematodes was carried out by taking ten 5-μL aliquot drops from a known volume of an aqueous nematode suspension from the Baermann funnel [15].…”

“…The nematode predatory action of the fungi D. flagrans and M. thaumasium has been extensively studied and proven in the literature (BRAGA & ARAÚJO, 2014;BRAGA et al, 2009;LUNS et al, 2018;SILVA et al, 2017b). However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to compare the activity of them over seven days of interactions on Rhabditis spp.…”

“…Likewise, A. musiformis has also demonstrated biological activity against nematodes of importance in the sheep industry. A recent study (SILVA et al, 2017) reported an important reduction (>90%) in the H. contortus infective larvae population in microplots with Panicum spp. grass with the addition of D. flagrans conidia.…”
