Phlebotomine fauna (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) in a residential area and in a fragment of savanna vegetation in the municipality of Pontal do Araguaia, Mato Grosso, Brazil

Abstract: Identification of phlebotomine species in endemic areas is fundamental for analyzing the eco-epidemiological determinants of leishmaniasis. This study had the aim of investigating the phlebotomine fauna in an urban area and in a fragment of native savanna in the municipality of Pontal do Araguaia, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, using CDC light traps. One hundred and twenty-three phlebotomine specimens belonging to seventeen different species were caught. Our results indicate synanthropic potential among vector … Show more

“…L. longipalpis and L. cruzi, which are both proven vectors of the visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil, were not captured at that location. This result differed from the capture reports in urban areas with Cerrado fragments 23,25 . Surprisingly, even in the absence of L. longipalpis and L. cruzi and no reported cases of VL, Le.…”

“…Light trap captures allowed the identification of 630 sandflies belonging to 28 species, from 11 genera, confirming the large diversity of the phlebotomine sandfly fauna at these three settlements in the municipality of Cáceres, as already reported from other places in the State of Mato Grosso [14][15][16] . According to Missawa and Maciel 17 and Amaral et al 18 , the variety of phlebotomine sandflies found in the State of Mato Grosso is as expected (107 species) considering the diversity of biomes characteristic of the region, such as savannah, Pantanal, transition forest, and the Amazon rainforest.…”

“…It is an important fact since larval stages of sandflies require a humid environment, as noted by Amaral et al [35]. There is no report in the literature as to an association of this index with the issue of leishmaniases.…”
