Prevalence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in cattle from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: [Prevalência de anticorpos anti-Neospora caninum em rebanhos bovinos de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil.] Revista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, v. 16, n. 3, p. 133-138, 2007. Embrapa Beef Cattle, BR 262, km 4, Caixa Postal 154, Campo Grande, MS 79002-970, Brazil. E-mail: andreott@cnpgc.embrapa.br Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular parasite that can infect domestic and wild canids, as well as ruminants and equines. It was described in 1988 and has been known as a major cause of abortion in b… Show more

“…The results of this study reinforce the information collected by Oshiro et al (2007) that showed a prevalence of 14.8% to neosporosis in cows and in cattle in Mato Grosso do Sul and identified abortion as a risk factor associated to neosporosis. To demonstrate the impact of disease on reproductive performance of heifers the significance of association between two qualitative variables was tested: the cases of abortion and seropositivity for neosporosis.…”

“…Serological tests to identify infected animals, may require a higher sensitivity, lower cut-off than should be suggested for the diagnosis of bovine abortion. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul the epidemiological survey was carried out with the cutoff of 1:50 (OSHIRO et al, 2007;ANDREOTTI et al, 2010). For these reasons we defined a cut-off with a tendency to give greater sensitivity to the test (1:50).…”

“…With regard to sex, five males (4.0%) and five females (4.5%) were positive, and there was no statistically significant difference between the sexes, as was also described in the studies carried out by Oliveira et al (2004), Jesus et al (2006), Romanelli et al (2007), Benetti et al (2008) and Moraes et al (2008). Moreover, when this variable was subjected to univariate analysis (P = 0.859), there was no association with occurrences of anti-N. caninum antibodies, thus demonstrating that in this region, males and females can be equally stricken and are subject to the same risks of infection (BOAVENTURA et al, 2007;CUNHA FILHO et al, 2008).…”

“…Among the six states, RJ had the lowest prevalence and MG the highest and dairy cattle had higher prevalence than beef cattle. In another large study from MS, N. caninum antibodies were found in cattle from 143 of 205 herds (IFAT 1:50); the cows were older than two years (OSHIRO et al, 2007). Overall seroprevalence was 14.9% (Table 4).…”
