Exploring life cycle-based sustainability indicators for building structural frames in concrete

Abstract: This paper aims at advancing on the validation of indicators of building concrete frames' sustainability from an integrated, life cycle perspective. A case study approach investigates (i) feasibility of comparing sustainability performance of different flooring systems; and (ii) similarity between environmental indicators trends for a typical flooring system and corresponding whole superstructure. Three residential buildings are analyzed, using either prestressed concrete flat (PCF) slabs or reinforced concret… Show more

“…Consideration of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions is an attempt to advance from previous work focusing on resource use and ecosystem quality (SAADE et al, 2012;OLIVEIRA;SILVA, 2013) and enlarge the assessment scope to include information on human health aspects. From the impact categories suggested by EN 15804:2012 that are more frequently found, POCP is the only one that alludes to human health issues.…”

“…Carvalho (2009) and Carvalho and Sposto (2012) proposed global sustainability indicators for projects and specifications for wall systems (facades and partitions), based on environmental, social and economic criteria for social housing. Oliveira, Silva and Gomes (2013) proposed environmental and economic performance indicators for the project of concrete structures. However, they did not address criteria related to the social aspects of sustainability and for other construction elements.…”
