A … Show more

“…Factors such as position in the landscape and depth were reported by farmers in defining environments with good or low soil quality; for them, soils located in less sloping areas are more productive because they are deeper and less susceptible to the erosive process. The different depths are determined by the curvature of the land, and, characteristically, ecosystems are directly controlled by the topography of the terrain, which, in turn, influences characteristics such as surface runoff (Chagas et al, 2013). According to a farmer's narrative, "where the soil is deeper, it produces better" (Audeh et al, 2011;Correia et al, 2007).…”

“…As a general rule, deeper and more evolved soils generally occur on convex slopes, while shallower (saprolitics) and less evolved soils tend to occur on concave slopes (Chagas et al, 2013). The shape (curvature) and orientation (solar radiation incidence) of slopes are important in pedogenesis, for directly affecting the air and soil temperature level, evapotranspiration and soil moisture, as well as other important soil properties (Senthilkumar et al, 2009;Camargo et al, 2010;Oliveira et al, 2013).…”
