Prevalence of Open Angle Glaucoma in Accompanying First Degree Relatives of Patients with Glaucoma

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of open angle glaucoma in first-degree relatives accompanying POAG patients during routine examination in a reference hospital. METHOD: First-degree relatives of primary open angle glaucoma patients who accompanied their relatives to the glaucoma service of a reference hospital were screened for glaucoma. “…Therefore, we saw a great opportunity amongst those who accompanied their glaucoma patient relatives to the Glaucoma clinic to carry out this study. The identified prevalence of 18.9% of primary open angle glaucoma amongst the first-degree relatives of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma found in this study is similar to that reported by Vegini et al (20) (16.8%). The Vegini's study also screened those who accompanied their glaucoma patients to a referral tertiary health facility.…”

“…It is, however, higher than 13.3% that was found in another study in India (5) . In our study, the prevalence of glaucoma was higher amongst offspring (13.7%) compare to siblings (5.2%) as also reported by Vegini et al (20) . However, both the American and Indian studies (5,14) reported higher prevalence amongst siblings than offspring.…”

“…Entretanto, apesar de várias entidades promoverem a iniciativa de programas de triagem em massa, um protocolo eficiente e custo-efetivo ainda não está disponível (8) . Uma possível estratégia para aumentar a efetividade de protocolos de triagem seria focar em populações de risco, dentre as quais as de raça negra, com pressão intraocular acima dos níveis estatisticamente aceitos e parentes de glaucomatosos.…”

“…These patients suffer from high IOP. Besides high IOP, family history is considered a risk factor for POAG, with a relative risk of 9.2 in populations with positive family histories (21). Finding out the relative risk could be very valuable in predicting the status of the disease in a population.…”
