Efficacy of Gluma Desensitizer® on dentin hypersensitivity in periodontally treated patients

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this double-blind, controlled, split-mouth designed clinical trial was to assess the effect of a single application of Gluma Desensitizer ® on alleviating dentin hypersensitivity. Twelve subjects entered the study and ten completed the protocol. Each subject had two teeth treated: one with Gluma Desensitizer ® according to the manufacturer's instructions and one with water. The assessment of pain was performed with the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), after tactile (probe), thermal (cold blast … Show more

“…This is in accordance with the findings of Litkowski [9] and Du Min et al [25], who found NovaMin to be a more effective desensitizer. An in vivo study reported that Gluma desensitizer was not effective in relieving dentinal hypersensitivity after 4 weeks; this can be attributed to a relatively large number of open and partially occluded tubules remaining after treatment [26]. …”

“…Provisional crowns are an important part of prosthodontic treatment because they protect the prepared tooth and prevent teeth migration, and occlusal changes reduce dentinal sensitivity and restore function until cementation of the definitive prosthesis 2, 3. The prognosis of an intact abutment tooth is related to the phases of the preparation, provisional crown, and temporary and definitive cementation 3, 4…”

“…Dentine adhesive systems, which seal the tubules from external stimuli, e.g., hot and cold, should prevent hydrodynamic fluid shifts, thereby stopping the stimulation of the nerve fibers and the resulting pain 4, 9, 10…”
