Effect of diode laser irradiation on the apical sealing of MTA retrofillings

Abstract: Apical sealing is essential for the success of paraendodontic surgery, so any procedure that may favor an adequate sealing of the apical remainder should be performed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of diode laser irradiation on the apical sealing of root-end cavities with MTA retrofillings. Root canals in twenty extracted human teeth were shaped with K-files and filled with gutta-percha. The apexes were cut off and root-end preparations were performed. The roots were divided randomly … Show more

“…24 Rhodamine B isothiocyanate is a fluorescent dye with chemical formula C 29 H 30 ClN 3 O 3 S frequently used in CLSM 11,25 and in leakage studies. 26,27 Rhodamine has excellent phototophysic properties such as high levels of absorption coefficient and quantum yield. 28 The specific amount of dye was selected by empirical method 25 and 0.3 mg/mL was chosen as the appropriate concentration for endodontic AH Plus sealer studies, as reported by our pilot study.…”

“…The first study showed that diode laser irradiation does not improve the apical seal of AMTA (80). A dye leakage study compared a combination of using Er,Cr:YSGG laser and an AMTA root-end filling with laser and cyanoacrylate (81).…”

“…Root end cavities prepared by using the Erbium: Yttrium, Aluminium, Garnet (Er:YAG) laser show smaller microleakage than those prepared using an ultrasonic instrument (18). However, the diode laser irradiation does not improve the apical sealing of mineral trioxide aggregate retrofillings (20). The Erbium, Chromium: Yttrium, Scandium, Gallium, Garnet (ErCr:YSGG) laser (Waterlase, Biolase Technology, San Clemente, CA) can be used for the removal of the smear layer (21), biomechanical preparation (22), apicoectomies, root end preparation, hemostasis, and sterilization of the root end apex and surrounding tissues (19).…”
