Marine and coastal environmental education in the context of global climate changes - synthesis and subsidies for ReBentos (Coastal Benthic Habitats Monitoring Network)

Abstract: As changes in coastal and marine environments are expected to negatively affect Brazilian ecosystems, the importance of Marine Environmental Education (MEE) comes to the fore. However, so far only 32 contributions related to this issue have been published in Brazil. The MEE workgroup of ReBentos aims at promoting EE and the communication of marine ecological research to the scholastic public as a whole, as well as to groups which exert an influence on general perception, such as the media, politicians, and sci… Show more

“…New Zealand's science curriculum also came up short on the inclusion of ocean concepts, with the same two terms "ocean" and "marine" being absent (Gough, 2017). An analysis of the Australian curriculum revealed minimal references to ocean related content (Gough, 2017), and Berchez et al (2016) reported similar findings on the inclusion of environmental-education activities in Brazil.…”

“…The Instituto Curicaca (Curicaca Institute) is one of such organizations seeking to build upon traditional community knowledge of the Atlantic Forest biome in Rio Grande do Sul (Bohrer et al, 2009). Educators in the Graduate Program in Marine Sciences Applied to Teaching at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina -Itajaí, also seek to inform public school teachers and promote ocean literacy in southern Brazil (Berchez et al, 2016). Similarly, MIBIM employs undergraduate student-monitors to bring zoological collection specimens into the school environment in the Baixada Santista (Freitas et al, 2018).…”
