Fish passage ladders from Canoas Complex - Paranapanema River: evaluation of genetic structure maintenance of Salminus brasiliensis (Teleostei: Characiformes)

Abstract: The aim of this study, utilizing RAPD techniques, was to determine the genetic variability of Salminus brasiliensis groups collected at passage ladders of the hydroelectric plants (HEP) Canoas I and Canoas II -Paranapanema River (Brazil), as well as to estimate the population structure through different parameters of genetic diversity. The data obtained allowed us to conclude that S. brasiliensis of the Canoas Complex has a moderate index of genetic variability ( > 42.00%) when compared to that of other migrat… Show more

“…At Lajeado Dam, fish migrating downstream were virtually absent from the ladder (Agostinho et al, 2011), and the abundance of eggs and larvae declined dramatically along the reservoir (Agostinho et al, 2007b). The similar trends observed at Peixe Angical and Lajeado, together with other evaluations (Agostinho et al, 2007b;Lopes et al, 2007;Suzuki et al, 2011), indicate that large Neotropical dams may fail to allow the downstream passage of young and adults.…”

“…Similar results were reported by Ferreira et al (2014) in an AFLP marker analysis of the sedentary species Geophagus brasiliensis in the Laranjinha River. Lopes et al (2007) studied the migratory species Salminus brasiliensis and sampled at fish ladders of Canoas I, Canoas II, and Rio Paranapanema. They showed that the greater part of molecular variance (AMOVA) was found within groups (~98%) with low levels of structuring between different localities (F ST = 0.018).…”

“…The R ST values under the SMM are expected to be greater than the F ST values under the IAM (Slatkin, 1995), although the inverse has been observed in some fish species (e.g., Pereira et al, 2009). Low indexes of F ST have been observed in other studies with characiforms, such as in Colossoma macropomum (Santos et al, 2007), Piaractus mesopotamicus (Calcagnotto & DeSalle, 2009;Iervolino et al, 2010), Prochilodus argenteus (Hatanaka et al, 2006;Sanches et al, 2012), Prochilodus costatus (Carvalho-Costa et al, 2008), Prochilodus lineatus (Revaldaves et al, 1997) and Salminus brasiliensis (Lopes et al, 2007).…”
