Redescription of the type species of Odontostilbe Cope, 1870 (Teleostei: Characidae: Cheirodontinae), and description of three new species from the Amazon basin

Abstract: The widespread Neotropical cheirodontine Odontostilbe fugitiva is reviewed, and three new species of the genus are described from the Amazon basin. A neotype is designated for O. fugitiva, from the mouth of the río Mazán, upper río Amazonas basin, Peru. Three nominal species are herein considered as synonyms of O. fugitiva: O. madeirae, O. drepanon, and O. caquetae. The three new species are respectively O. ecuadorensis from the río Napo basin, O. nareuda from the rio Madeira basin, and O. parecis from the rio… Show more

“…The members of this tribe also show specialized organs in the caudal fin of the males that vary from the presence of modified scales to the presence of hypertrophied tissues apparently of glandular function (Malabarba & Weitzman, 1999Malabarba et al, 2004). Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882) is a member of some basal genera of the cheirodontines that have little sexual dimorphism and are all externally fertilized (Malabarba, 1998;Bührnheim & Malabarba, 2006).…”

“…This conforms to the pattern of ichthyofauna endemism in the Tocantins basin discussed by Bertaco & Carvalho (2010) and Bertaco et al (2011) who listed 42 species endemic to the upper portions of the rio Tocantins system. Species of Odontostilbe are relatively common and abundant across the Amazon basin (Bührnheim & Malabarba, 2006), in the río Orinoco drainage (Bührnheim & Malabarba, 2007) and in the Paraná-Paraguay basins (Malabarba, 2003). There is, however, a remarkable absence of records of this genus in the Tocantins-Araguaia basin.…”
