ABSTRACT. Reproductive biology of Astyanax henseli (Teleostei, Characidae) in the upper Rio dos Sinos, RS, Brazil. This study describes the reproductive biology of a population of Astyanax henseli Melo & Buckup, 2006 from the upper Rio dos Sinos, Caraá, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of 336 specimens was analyzed, comprising 169 males, 154 females and 13 individuals of undetermined sex. The reproductive season lasted approximately five months, from August to December, gonadossomatic index (GSI) peaked of in October, corresponding to the end of winter and the spring in the southern hemisphere. No correlation was found between the GSI and abiotic factors (temperature, rainfall and photoperiod). However, these factors may trigger gonad maturation. Also, no correlation was observed between biotic variables, such as stomach repletion index (RI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI), and GSI. Despite that, high RI values during the reproductive period may indicate that A. henseli maintains its feeding activity throughout the reproductive months, while low HSI values during the peak of GSI suggest a higher energy expenditure of the liver during this period. The sex ratio in the population was 1:1 for the total number of individuals sampled, among different classes of length, and among the different months of the year. The size at first gonadal maturation was 69 mm for males and 60 mm for females. The absolute fecundity mean was 3,038 oocytes and the relative fecundity mean was 0.13 oocytes mg -1 . The oocyte development indicated that A. henseli is a total spawner. KEYWORDS.Reproductive period, small size characid, gonadosomatic index, fecundity, first gonadal maturation. RESUMO. A new characid species, Hemibrycon divisorensis, is described from the río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru. The new species is distinguished from all Hemibrycon species by the presence of a wide black asymmetrical spot covering base of caudal-fin rays and extending along entire length of caudal-fin rays 9 to 12-13 (except from H. surinamensis), and a black band in the lower half of the caudal peduncle extending from the region above the last anal-fin rays to the caudal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from most species of the genus by the number of scale rows below the lateral line (4-5 vs 5-9), except H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi, and H. surinamensis. It differs from these species by scale and fin ray counts and color pattern. The lack of a supraorbital in Hemibrycon species is discussed and confirmed.Uma nova espécie de caracídeo, Hemibrycon divisorensis, é descrita para a bacia do río Ucayali, Loreto, Peru. A nova espécie distingue-se das demais espécies de Hemibrycon pela presença de uma ampla mancha preta assimétrica na base dos raios da nadadeira caudal estendida até a extremidade dos raios 9 a 12 ou 13 (exceto de H. surinamensis), e de uma faixa preta na metade inferior do pedúnculo caudal desde a região acima dos últimos raios da nadadeira anal até a base da nadadeira caudal. Ela distingue-se da maioria das espécies do gênero pelo número de escamas abaixo da linha lateral (4-5 vs 5-9), exceto de H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi e H. surinamensis. Ela difere destas espécies pela contagem de escamas, raios das nadadeiras e colorido padrão. Discute-se e confirma-se a ausência do osso supraorbital em Hemibrycon.

The reproductive period and its relation with somatic and abiotic factors, the relative and absolute fecundity, spawning type, length of first maturation and sex ratio is describe for Gymnotus aff. carapo from a small lake at Itapuã State Park, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Gymnotus aff. carapo presents a relatively long reproductive cycle extending from November/2003 to March/ 2004. Decreases in water conductivity and increases in dissolved oxygen are correlated with increased gonadal development in males. In females, seasonal increases in temperature and photoperiod and decreases in dissolved oxygen are correlated with increased gonadal development. The mean absolute fecundity was 915.3 oocytes, and mean relative fecundity 0.20 oocytes/ mg body weight. Egg size distributions indicate multiple spawning. The size of first maturation was 141 mm in females and 146 mm in males. The sex ratio was 1:1, with a male bias only in smaller size classes.São descritos o período reprodutivo e a relação deste com fatores bióticos e abióticos, a fecundidade absoluta e relativa, o tipo de desova, comprimento de primeira maturação e proporção sexual de Gymnotus aff. carapo de um pequeno lago no Parque Estadual de Itapuã, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A espécie apresentou um período reprodutivo relativamente longo, de novembro de 2003 até março de 2004. Houve correlação significativamente positiva entre o IGS dos machos e o oxigênio dissolvido e negativa em relação à condutividade. O IGS das fêmeas se correlacionou positivamente com a temperatura e fotoperíodo, e negativamente com o oxigênio dissolvido. A fecundidade absoluta média foi de 915,3 ovócitos e a fecundidade relativa média foi de 0,20 ovócitos por miligrama de peso da fêmea. A desova foi considerada parcelada e o tamanho de primeira maturação gonadal foi de 141 mm para fêmeas e 146 mm para machos. A proporção sexual no período amostrado foi de 1:1, sendo que somente na menor classe de comprimento houve maior abundância dos machos.
