Reproductive and population dynamics of the Bay whiff Citharichthys spilopterus Günther, 1862 (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) in the Mamanguá Inlet, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: Bay whiffs, Citharichthys spilopterus, were sampled in Mamanguá Inlet between March 1990 and March 1992 for evaluation of its reproductive dynamic. Bay whiffs presented a crescent gradient of abundance from the deepest to the shallowest stations. The mean total length by oceanographic station showed a clear tendency of a relationship between bigger sizes and higher depths. Males predominated along the studied period and on the smallest length groups. Higher values of alometric condition factor, gonadosomatic r… Show more

“…Histological analysis showed that the stage of maturation reached is adequate for induced ovulation, due to the presence of several vitellogenic oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles after induction. However, some oocytes were not released and became atretic (Dias et al, 1998(Dias et al, , 2005Honji et al, 2006Honji et al, , 2009. This phase of the development is observed and discussed in some works, including studies in S. hilarii (Takahashi, 2006;Honji et al, 2009).…”

“…total body weight minus gonad weight GSR 1 and GSR 2 must present major values in the period when the ovaries contribute the most to the individuals' total weight, the period prior to laying the oocytes. Thus, the differences between these two relations were plotted in graphics along the months, evidencing as reproductive period that related to the loss of ovaries weight, due to the spawning process (Dias et al, 2005).…”

“…BF and RBF for C. spilopterus from Cananéia estuary was lower than that reported by Dias et al (2005) for the population of Mamanguá inlet, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. BF and RBF estimated by these authors ranged from 7,000 to 61,000 oocytes and from 253 to 1,552 oocytes g …”
