Use of the pectoralis major fasciocutaneous flap in the treatment of post sternotomy dehiscence: a new approach

Abstract: The procedure was rapid and effective. Compared with techniques using muscle, myocutaneous or greater omentum flaps, this surgery was less aggressive and maintained the integrity of tissue region. The authors considered that this technique should be used as the first option, leaving the flaps to more complex cases of relapse.

“…Tewarie and colleagues reported superior results, using bilateral pectoralis major muscle flap to the omental flap technique, in patients without sternal bone necrosis, with relatively low recurrence and mortality risks [Tewarie 2019]. Anger and colleagues described a new surgical technique to repair dehiscence using fasciocutaneous flaps from the pectoralis major fascia in 21 patients [Anger 2012].…”

“…Some of dehiscence can be corrected only with debridement of the edges and its approach after improvement of the conditions of the tissues involved. For the correction of more complex defects, various techniques were being described including muscle, musculocutaenous and skin flaps, also omentum flaps with subsequent skin graftting, and recently the fasciocutaneous flap including the pectoralis major muscle fascia [ 3 - 8 ] .…”
