The magnitude of syphilis: from prevalence to vertical transmission

Abstract: Introduction:In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 1.9 million pregnant women were infected with syphilis worldwide, of which 66.5% had adverse fetal effects in cases of untreated syphilis. Congenital syphilis contributes significantly to infant mortality, accounting for 305,000 perinatal deaths worldwide annually.Aim:To estimate the prevalence of syphilis in parturients, the incidence of congenital syphilis and the vertical transmission rate.Material and methods:a cross-sectional study wi… Show more

“…A study carried out by Lima and colleagues 12 showed that the absence of prenatal care raises the chance of congenital syphilis by a factor of eleven when compared to having at least one prenatal consultation 12 . Performing adequate prenatal care enables the early diagnosis and treatment of syphilis during pregnancy, thus avoiding the vertical transmission of the disease 13 . The proportion of women who were inadequately treated and untreated totalled approximately 70% in this study, although this figure is still lower than that found in the Federal District, in which a study of 100 women with syphilis during pregnancy found that only 1% had adequate treatment of the disease.…”

“…Esse fato mostra o quanto ainda há falhas sobre as formas de prevenção da IST. Estudo realizado no Rio de Janeiro mostrou que a ocorrência de gestação prévia com sífilis não eliminou o risco da doença em futuras gestações (22) .…”

“…Syphilis, an important cause of both stillbirth and neonatal death in some regions, will be documented for this study . Since syphilis is virtually always transmitted transplacentally from the mother to the fetus during pregnancy and is associated with a maternal antibody response [ 16 , 17 ], all cases of syphilis should be identifiable by antibodies in maternal blood or alternately, cord or neonatal blood. For all stillbirths and neonatal deaths, we will aim to test maternal serum samples for syphilis.…”
