Interaction between infection, nutrition and immunity in tropical medicine

Abstract: Host nutritional state has an important role in susceptibility to bacteria, parasites, and viral infections. Infection precipitates the appearance of signs and symptoms of nutrition deficiencies in the undernourished; this can aggravate infection evolution. Infection stimulates specific and non-specific host defense mechanisms; these are directly influenced by the nutritional state of micro- and macronutrients. Immune alterations, which are closely related to nutritional status, markedly contribute to a higher… Show more

“…These findings corroborate previous studies that describe this distribution in burn victims (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14). An important factor that indirectly affects life conditions of the studied population, which can be related to nutritional behavior, is the low level of formal education (Table 2).…”

“…Burns provoked by alcohol are more profound than those caused by scalding, since the time of exposure to heat in burns by flammable liquid is longer (8,9). Nutritional status has been reported, in various studies, as an important factor in recovery of burn patients by reducing complications and rates of morbidity and mortality, which are generally elevated in these patients (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14). The mean height of patients was 1.67 m, while average weight was 73.86 kg and BMI was 25.81 kg/m 2 .…”

“…The infectious process is usually followed by hypercatabolism, which is aggravated by anorexia, resulting in the loss and the consequent depletion of the body's nutrient reserves, thereby causing great changes in the metabolism of the host 21 . Some studies have reported differences in body mass index (BMI), glucose, triglycerides and lipoproteins in patients with active VL [22][23][24] .…”

“…Maintenance of the nutritional state is highly important to strengthen the host and supply the elements for its defense and a better quality of life. In this sense, the patient's approach must always involve the 3 following areas simultaneously: early nutritional support, specific treatment of infection, and restoration of the immune system (13).…”

“…Host nutritional status has an important role in the susceptibility to viral infections, bacteria, and parasites. Infection accelerates the appearance of signs and symptoms of nutrition deficiencies in the undernourished individuals and can exacerbate the evolution of the infection process; they both interact synergistically and are a public health problem, mainly in areas of poor basic sanitation; poverty and ignorance also influence eating habits (13). Infections can lead to loss of appetite, decreased nutrient utilization, and efficiency of food, and increased energy requirements (14).…”
