Oral and vocal fold diadochokinesis in dysphonic women

Abstract: The evaluation of oral and vocal fold diadochokinesis (DDK) in individuals with voice disorders may contribute to the understanding of factors that affect the balanced vocal production. Scientific studies that make use of this assessment tool support the knowledge advance of this area, reflecting the development of more appropriate therapeutic planning.ObjectiveTo compare the results of oral and vocal fold DDK in dysphonic women and in women without vocal disorders. Material and methodsFor this study, 28 voice… Show more

“…For analysis purposes, the first two and the last two seconds were excluded, considering the number of emissions performed for four seconds, in the interval from the third to the sixth second. The analysis of monosyllabic emissions was performed by the Motor Speech Profile Advanced Program (MSP), Model 5141, Version: 2.5.2 (KayPentax®), and the sampling rate of 11025 Hz used in the capture adjustment (21,22) . Chart 1 shows the parameters analyzed for monosyllabic emissions.…”

“…Only two studies evaluated oral and laryngeal DDK in individuals with behavioral dysphonia with several types of vocal affections, comparing the diadochokinetic parameters between dysphonic and non-dysphonic individuals (20) , and investigated vocal folds behavior by age groups of men and women with vocal alterations (21) . Thus, it is necessary to conduct further studies in order to verify and characterize the neuromotor behavior of vocal folds in the different mass lesions, as well as the effect of different types of exercises and therapeutic techniques.…”

“…The value used to determine the point was the mean intensity of the DDK sample (DDKava) provided by the MSP program itself during the analysis for each emission (18) - Figure 1. It was determined as standard that the analysis line should be lowered or elevated in order not to compute subpeaks due to possible instabilities in the energy contours produced by the graph (18,20) . The DDK parameters are automatically provided by the MSP program.…”
