Effects of folk medicinal plant extract Ankaferd Blood Stopper® on early bone healing

Abstract: ObjectiveSeveral haemostatic agents are available for clinical use. Ankaferd Blood Stopper® (ABS), a mixture of five medicinal plant extracts, has been used historically as a haemostatic agent. The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the effects of ABS on early bone healing using a rat tibia defect model.Material and MethodsSixteen male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups of 8 animals each. After deep anesthesia with ketamine, bone defects (3 mm diameter and 2 mm deep) were created in the righ… Show more

“…21 The accumulation of siderophages in the kidney tissue may be a sign of tissue repair in our study. Furthermore, a recent study has demonstrated that adding ABS on the pancreatic fluid produces aggregates of protein network resulting in a solid layer over the pancreatic fluid like a frozen gel with important in vitro biochemical alterations.…”

“…The effects of ABS in preventing liver lacerations, partial nephrectomies, air leakage into the lung, and bleeding have been demonstrated via animal studies (14)(15)(16)(17). In another animal study, İşler et al reported that ABS causes new bone formation and reductions in necrosis and inflammation in a rat tibial defect model (18).…”

“…Besides its hemostatic activity, it possesses antiinflammatory actions, antimicrobial activity, antithrombin, antiplatelet, wound healing, and antioxidant characteristics, and antineoplastic properties in vitro, and it does not exhibit any side effects (1,3,5,18,19).…”

“…ankaferd.com). In relation to this issue, İşler et al (19) indicated that the application of ABS to tibia defects decreased the occurrence of inflammation and necrosis in the early bone healing period. Recently, Amanvermez et al (20) reported that the values of proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) were elevated in the postfracture first week according to the control (baseline), but circulating levels of these cytokines were found to be low after Ankaferd application to the fracture region.…”
