Radiopacity evaluation of root-end filling materials by digitization of images

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of 5 root-end filling materials (white MTA-Angelus, grey MTA-Angelus, IRM, Super EBA and Sealer 26). Five specimens (10 mm diameter X 1 mm thickness) were made from each material and radiographed next to an aluminum stepwedge varying in thickness from 2 to 16 mm. Radiographs were digitized and the radiopacity of the materials was compared to that of the aluminum stepwedge using VIXWIN 2000 software in millimeters of aluminum (mm Al). Data were analyzed … Show more

“…Radiopacity in an essential property for a cement to be identified and distinguished from the adjacent anatomic structures (18). Similarly, it is stressing that is also crucial use of radiopacifiers that do not compromise biocompatibility and the physico-chemical performance of the materials (19).…”

“…Os valores de radiopacidade observados para o cimento Portland puro estão de acordo com estudos prévios 13,18 . O MTA Angelus  branco apresentou maior radiopacidade, com o valor de 4,71 mm de alumínio, em acordo com outros estudos 24,29,30 . Considerando-se que a radiopacidade favorece a visualização do material na radiografia, a associação do cimento Portland a óxido de bismuto, iodofórmio e carbonato de bismuto apresentou resultados adequados.…”

“…Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has been considered as the ideal root-end filling material because of its low solubility, low cytotoxicity, good tissue tolerance and induction of mineralized tissue formation 1 . MTA is a white or grey powder which sets when there is moisture 2,3 .…”

“…MTA is a white or grey powder which sets when there is moisture 2,3 . MTA primarily consists of tricalcium silicate (3CaD.SiD 2 ), dicalcium silicate (2CaD.SiD 2 ) 4,5 as binder phases, and bismuth oxide to increase its radiopacity 1 . Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) has been studied as root-end filling material to overcome some MTA drawbacks such as the long setting time and its negative implications for the clinical needs [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] .…”
