Influence of calcium hydroxide points on the quality of intracanal dressing filling

Abstract: PurposeThe aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the quality of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] paste filling (Ultracal, Ultradent) associated or not with Ca(OH)2-containing gutta-percha points (Calcium Hydroxide Plus Points™, Roeko) in curved root canals.Material and MethodsOne hundred and twenty roots of extracted human teeth, randomly divided into three curvature ranges (mild - 0 to 14°; moderate - 15° to 29°; severe - >30°) were used. After chemomechanical preparation, the roots were assigned to 4 group… Show more

“…Our results are in agreement with those by Cvek et al, 12 Sigurdsson et al, 16 Deveaux et al, 18 Torres et al 19 and Radhe et al 20 The greatest difficulty in clinical practice is filling the apical third. According to our results, beginning with 15,000 rpm for the apical third, and then reducing the speed to 5,000 rpm to fill the middle and cervical thirds, can help the three-dimensional filling of the root canal.…”

“…In the methodology used by Deveaux et al 18 the speed of 500 rpm was referred to. However, Rahde et al 20 and Caliskan et al 21 only refer to low and moderate speeds, without specifying it.…”

“…Deveaux et al 23 preferred the speed of 500 rpm; whereas, Rahde et al 24 and Caliskan et al 25 only entitled as low and moderate speeds, without particularizing it. Deonizio et al 21 used 5000 rpm, 10000 rpm and 15000 rpm in their experimental groups which are quite realistic speeds for clinical use.…”

“…The quality of CH fillings has been extensively investigated but most studies are limited to comparisons of different techniques for CH placement within root canals [12][13][14][23][24][25][26][27][28] . Also, some previous results have pointed out that severe root canal curvatures 13 and small apical diameters 28 may impair the optimal delivery of CH pastes.…”

“…In the present study, the four sides of the acrylic blocks were scanned to provide a more accurate analysis. To date, apart from tooth clearing 27 , which also allows a three--dimensional analysis of the intracanal dressing filling, only two-dimensional radiographs 12,24-26 have been used. Another relevant methodological aspect of this experiment was the quantitative analysis, assessing the mean percentage of canal filling, and not only a qualitative analysis based on scores, as reported by several authors 12,24,27 .…”
