Antibacterial effect of root canal preparation and calcium hydroxide paste (Calen) intracanal dressing in primary teeth with apical periodontitis

Abstract: he aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial action of root canal mechanical preparation using 2.5% sodium hypochlorite as the irrigating solution and a calcium hydroxide paste as the antibacterial intracanal dressing in human primary teeth root canals with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis by means of microbial culture. A total of 26 root canals of human primary teeth with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis were used. Samples were collected before, 72h after biomechanical treatment and 72h … Show more

“…The antibacterial activity of Calen paste has been extensively demonstrated (4,5,14,17). In the present study, the Calen paste presented antibacterial activity against all test microorganisms with the diameters of the zones of bacterial growth inhibition ranging from 12.33 to 20.67 mm.…”

“…The endodontic infection in primary teeth with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis is of polymicrobial nature with predominance of anaerobic bacteria (1), which are disseminated within the root canal system these microorganisms may persist even after biomechanical preparation and use of intracanal dressing (4), root canal filling materials should be able to eliminate residual pathogens, neutralize their toxic products and prevent canal reinfection to in order to create a favorable environment for the healing process to proceed (5). It is therefore important that root canal filling materials used in primary teeth have antimicrobial activity (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11) and the antimicrobial spectrum of action of these materials should be investigated.…”

“…[14][15][16][17] Calcium hydroxide is a material that has been used virtually as a panacea in dentistry. Its antibacterial properties 18 (attributed to its alkaline pH), resorbable nature 19 and osteogenic potential 20 are well-known. This material has been widely used in permanent teeth 21 but it is only recently that calcium hydroxide has been utilized for filling primary root canals.…”
