Effects of desensitizing agents on dentinal tubule occlusion

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the features of dentinal tubules occlusion following application of three commercially available desensitizing agents: potassium oxalate-based / Oxa-Gel (OX), HEMA and glutaraldehyde-based / Gluma Desensitizer (GD) and acidulated phosphate fluoride-based / Nupro Gel (AF). Buccal cervical areas of twenty-four extracted human third molars were smoothed and wet-polished with SiC papers and diamond pastes, in order to simulate the clinical aspect of hypersensitive dentin cervi… Show more

“…9 The degree of desensitizing activity increases with the increase of depth of penetration, because if the penetration level is less, there is chance of removal of deposits by brushing or dietary acids, but if the penetration level is more within the dentinal tubule, the brushing or dietary acids can't easily remove it; it can occlude the dentinal tubule better and thereby give more desensitizing effect. 10 The SEM study showed a wide range of depth of penetration within the dentinal tubule.…”

“…Arrais et al 31) reported that the oxalate crystals of Super Seal occluded dentinal tubules. In the SE-Bond treated group, dentinal tubules were occluded with deposits, and slightly rough surfaces were observed.…”

“…28,37 Triclosan containing desensitizer forms has a low surface energy and so it caused a decrease in wettability level of dentin surface. 38 Reduced wettability level may adversely affect the connection between dentin and resin. However, the glutaraldehyde including triclosan desensitizer is reacted with dentin phosphate and it may cause the bonding of the self-adhesive cement to improve.…”
