Microscopic analysis of dog dental pulp after pulpotomy and pulp protection with mineral trioxide aggregate and white Portland cement

Abstract: C Considering previous studies on the similarity between the chemical composition of the mineral trioxide aggregate and the Portland cement, the purpose of this study was to investigate the pulp response of dog's teeth after pulpotomy and direct pulp protection with MTA Angelus and white Portland cement. Thirty eight pulp remnants were protected with these materials. One hundred and twenty days after treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the specimens removed and prepared for histological analysis. Both m… Show more

“…MTA has some interesting characteristics, like: biocompatibility, antimicrobial effect, mechanical strength, adequate setting time, good marginal sealing, low shrinkage and can be applied even in moisture area [10][11]13,14,15,17 . Even though the formocresol is still one of the most frequent material used in pulpotomy in deciduous teeth 5 , it has some disadvantages for the vital tissue, such as: pulpal reactions, periapical effects and damages in the dental follicle of the successor tooth, besides toxic and mutagenic potencial [6][7][19][20][21][22] .…”

“…This characteristic promotes alkalinization of the site and the antimicrobial effect. When MTA is added straight on the pulpal tissue, there is a mineral deposition, creating a mineral barrier (dentin bridge), with a low level of inflammatory response 9,[14][15][16][17] .…”

“…MTA was developed with the purpose of serving as an apical root end filling material, but it has also proven to be successful in vital pulp therapy procedures both in animals 12, 13 and humans. 4 Many clinical studies have recommended that, MTA is a biocompatible material and its sealing ability is better than that of amalgam or zinc oxide eugenol.…”

“…A similaridade entre MTA e CP é demonstrada quanto ao potencial de biomineralização 7 , à capacidade de selamento 8 , às pulpotomias 8 e ao capeamento pulpar direto 9 . Contudo, o CP apresenta radiopacidade reduzida.…”
