Cystic renal cell carcinoma arising from multilocular cystic nephroma of the same kidney

Abstract: Multilocular cystic nephroma is an uncommon benign entity grouped among the cystic non-genetic diseases. It is characterized by variable-sized, non-communicating cysts separated by irregular thin walled septa. Though multilocular cystic nephroma is usually considered a benign lesion, malignant changes in the cysts should not be overlooked.

“…It stands at one end of a spectrum of renal cystic diseases of the childhood that includes MLCN, cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma, multilocular cysts with nodules of Wilms tumor, and Wilms tumors. 1 In adults (as in our case), the order would be as follows: benign multilocular cyst, multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma (MCRCC), and a cystic renal Several authors have reported on the difficulty of differentiating between MLCN and MLCC, whereas Omar et al 6 reported the only case of cystic renal cell carcinoma arising from MLCN existing in the literature up-to-date. Although the arousal of cystic renal cell carcinoma from MLCN is a controversial issue, there is evidence supporting a dynamic relation between those 2 conditions.…”

“…On one hand, although MLCN is a benign cystic disease, carcinomatous foci may rarely be identified within the cysts. 6 In contrary, MCRCC is a malignant disease compared with usual solid RCC containing fewer malignant cells, which seems to be proliferating at a slow rate. 7 It is worth mentioning that it has been proposed for MCRCC to be renamed and reclassified accordingly to its, probably, benign nature.…”

“…Malign stromal komponentler içeren olgularda lokal nüks gözlenmiştir. MEST olgularının bir kısmında da karsinomatöz ve berrak hücreli transformasyon raporlanmıştır (8,16). Özellikle hormonoterapi alan prostat adenokarsinomlu erkek olgularda malign özellikler gösteren MEST açısından dikkatli olunması önerilmiştir (7).…”

“…In individual cases of bilateral involvement and in tumors which invade the renal pelvis, partial nephron-sparing surgery may be possible [7 -10]. The clinical course is usually benign but the case of a cystic renal cell carcinoma arising from a multilocular cystic nephroma in a 65-year-old woman has been described [11]. Similar publications in the pediatric literature could not be found.…”
