Robotics in Pediatric Urology

Abstract: Robotic surgery has been slow to be fully accepted in the world of pediatric urology largely because of its initial application directed towards adult use and because of the inherent high cost associated with it. However, as previously shown, it has now become the gold standard for adolescent pyeloplasty in The United States. As the adoption of robotic surgery in children has become more widespread, its use has been applied to a broader spectrum of procedures with similar success rates to standard laparoscopy.… Show more

“…Since then, surgeons worldwide have embraced the rise of this new robotic surgery. The robotic platform provides many advancements, solving many tricky problems encountered during standard laparoscopy ( 9 , 10 ). First, it has stable 3D visualization with 10 times magnification, and the camera is manipulated by the surgeon instead of the assistant.…”

“…Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is currently the most widely applied in urology 24. Robot-assisted pyeloplasty is a major surgical procedure in the field of pediatric urology, and other robotic surgeries, such as partial or complete nephrectomy, ureterostomy, ureteral reimplantation, bladder reconstruction, etc, and has also been proven to be safe and effective 25–27. Navarrete Arellano and Garibay González reported a prospective observational study including 186 children who underwent RAS from 2015 to 2018 18.…”

“…Nevertheless, LP is technically demanding and has a long learning curve (7,8). RALP has reduced the technical difficulty of this procedure with a shorter learning curve compared to LP (9)(10)(11)(12)(13). Therefore, we believe that the three techniques should have similar outcomes.…”
