Research prioritization of men’s health and urologic diseases

Abstract: Objectives We sought to determine whether disease representation in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) reflects disease burden, measured by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study as disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs).Materials and Methods Two investigators performed independent assessment of ten men’s health and urologic diseases (MHUDs) in CDSR for systematic review and protocol representation, which were compared with percentage of total 2010 DALYs for the ten conditions. Data were anal… Show more

“…Pathologies of the genito-urinary tract are responsible for a considerable disease burden worldwide, leading to significant losses of income, lost working days, increased expenditures for national healthcare systems, and decreased quality of life (QoL) in the affected patients [1]. Among these diseases, infections and malignancies in this anatomical region are some of the most important illnesses in human medicine; nevertheless, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction, hypospadias, urinary incontinence, and vesicoureteral reflux are also relevant disorders affecting millions [2]. Before the 2000s, systematic data collection on the epidemiology of urological ailments was lacking.…”

“…Health topic and intended beneficiaries : Due to the broad scope of the Group's review portfolio and limited resources for conducting prioritization activities, the first part of this project focused on men with benign conditions of the prostate, including prostatitis and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Previous research has highlighted that the number of Cochrane reviews underrepresented the burden of these conditions [11].…”
