Mangrove communities were selected in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, near their southernmost limit of distribution, to study mineral nutrient relation in soils and plants. Communities included three true mangrove species, Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa and Avicennia germinans, and two associated species, the fern Acrostichum danaeifolium, and the grass Spartina densiflora. The sites included communities in the lower Río Tavares near Florianopolis city, Sonho beach near Palhoça city, and the Santo Antonio lagoon. These sites included a full range of mangroves under humid climate where winter temperatures, instead of salinity, may be the main factor regulating their productive capacity and species composition. Soil salinity was determined by the concentration of soluble Na, and soil C and N were linearly correlated indicating their association in organic matter. Tavares site showed higher specific conductivity, and concentrations of Na and Mg in the soil layer below 40 cm depth, indicating larger influence of marine water. Isotopic signature of C increased with soil depth suggesting that microorganisms decomposing organic matter are releasing 13 C depleted CO 2 . Nitrogen isotopic signature decreased with soil depth, indicating enrichment in 15 N possibly as a result of denitrification in the upper soil layers. Mineral elements in leaf tissues showed A. schaueriana with higher concentrations of N, P, Na, K, Cu, Zn, and Na/Ca ratio. Spartina densiflora was characterized by the lowest N and K concentrations, and the highest concentrations of Al and Fe. Rhizophora mangle and L. racemosa had the highest Ca concentrations. Carbon isotopic signatures identified S. densiflora as a C4 plant, and A. schaueriana as the mangrove species occupying comparatively more water stressed microsites than the rest. Leaf nitrogen isotopic signatures were positive, in correspondence with the soil values. The results support the hypothesis that sites sampled were comparatively fertile, because sediment transport through fresh water run-off is predominant in humid coasts, and therefore plants were not limited by nutrient supply, nor particularly stressed by soil salinity.Keywords: mangroves, soils, leaves, nutrients, stable isotopes, southwestern Atlantic latitudinal limit.Heterogeneidade da composição elementar e abundância natural de isótopos estáveis de C e N no solo e folhas dos manguezais no extremo sul da sua distribuição na costa Atlântica ocidental

Resumo: As características químicas do sedimento em conjunto com a estrutura de bosques de mangue são informações fundamentais para compreender a dinâmica deste ambiente. O objetivo foi analisar parâmetros químicos e a estrutura de bosque em manguezais com diferentes graus de pressão antrópica. Foram estudados dois manguezais em Paranaguá, PR, um localizado próximo a um complexo industrial e ao porto de Paranaguá, e outro localizado na Unidade de Conservação na Floresta Estadual do Palmito. Foram avaliados os teores de fósforo, matéria orgânica, amônio, nitrato e nitrogênio disponível, assim como a densidade e perímetro a altura do peito das espécies Rizhophorae mangle, Laguncularia racemosa e Aviscenia schaueriana. O manguezal da Vila Becker, com maior interferência antrópica, teve maiores concentrações de fósforo, amônio e nitrogênio total, indicando ser um sedimento com melhor fertilidade. Não houve diferenças entre os manguezais com relação a estrutura de bosque, mas a Rizophorae mangle teve a maior densidade entre as espécies avaliadas, independente do manguezal. A proximidade destes ambientes ao meio urbano e industrial pode estar alterando as características químicas do sedimento o que futuramente pode alterar a estrutura de bosque destes manguezais.Palavras-chave: Antropização; nutrientes; vegetação; estuário. Abstract:The chemical characteristics in conjunction with the mangrove forest structure are key information to understand the dynamics of this environment. The objective was to analyze chemical parameters and forest structure in mangroves under different anthropogenic stresses. Two mangroves were studied in Paranaguá, PR, one located near an industrial complex and the port of Paranaguá, and another one located in the Conservation Unit in Palmito State Forest. The levels of phosphorus, organic matter, ammonium, nitrate and nitrogen available were evaluated as well as the density and perimeter of the breast height of the species Rizhophorae mangle, Laguncularia racemosa and Aviscenia schaueriana. The Vila Becker mangrove, with greater anthropogenic interference, had higher concentrations of phosphorus, ammonia and total nitrogen, indicating a sediment with better fertility. There were no differences among mangroves in relation to forest structure, but Rizophorae mangle had the highest density among the evaluated species, independent of the mangrove. The proximity of these environments to the urban and industrial environment may be altering the chemical characteristics of the sediment, which in the future may alter the forest structure of these mangroves.

We investigated the role of plant host and soil variables in determining arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community composition in plant roots of two spatially separated mangrove estuaries on the rivers Aghanashini (14°30′30″N-74°22′44″E) and Gangavali (14°35′26″N-74°17′51″E) on the west coast of India. Both mangrove estuaries had similar plant species composition but differed in soil chemistries.We amplified a 550 bp portion of 18S small subunit (SSU) rDNA from mangrove plant roots and analysed it by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Clones representing unique RFLP patterns were sequenced. A total of 736 clones were obtained from roots of seven and five plant species sampled at Aghnashini and Gangavali, respectively. AMF phylotype numbers in plant roots at Aghanashini (12) were higher than at Gangavali (9) indicating quantitative differences in the AMF community composition in plant roots at the two mangrove estuaries.Because both estuaries had similar plant species composition, the quantitative difference in AMF communities between the estuaries could be an attribute of the differences in rhizospheric chemistry between the two sites.Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed overlap in the AMF communities of the two sites. Three and two AMF phylotypes had significant indicator value indices with specific hosts at Aghanashini and Gangavali respectively. Environmental vector fitting to NMDS ordination did not reveal a significant effect of any soil variable on AMF composition at the two sites. However, significant effects of both plant hosts and sites were observed on rhizospheric P.Our results indicate that root AMF community composition may be an outcome of plant response to rhizospheric variables. This suggests that plant identity may have a primary role in shaping AMF communities in mangroves.
