Carbon isotope composition and leaf anatomy as a tool to characterize the photosynthetic mechanism of Artemisia annua L.

Abstract: Leaves of Artemisia annua L. are a plentiful source of artemisinin, a drug with proven effectiveness against malaria. The aim of this study was to classify the photosynthetic mechanism of A. annua through studies of the carbon isotope composition (delta 13C) and the leaf anatomy. A. annua presented a delta 13C value of - 31.76 ± 0.07, which characterizes the plants as a typical species of the C3 photosynthethic mechanism, considering that the average delta 13C values for C3 and C4 species are -28 and -14, resp… Show more

“…By convention, this standard is set to zero, so the amount of carbon measured in plants and animals is expressed as a negative number (Petersen & Fry, 1987). As C 4 plants have more C 13 than C 3 plants, their LC 13 % signature (-15% to -10%) is higher than that of C 3 (-21% to -30%) plants (Cerling, 1999;Marchese et al, 2005), so LC 13 % provides an indirect method for inferring C 4 photosynthesis.…”

“…al., 2002) e mecanismo fotossintético do tipo C3 (Marchese et al, 2005).

“…A. annua is originally from China and has 13 C‰ values of -31.76, which is typical for a C 3 species. It is cultivated in Brazil, with the best yield of biomass and artemisinin on the Southern portion of that country, where the low temperature allows the decrease of CO 2 losses by photorespiration and good biomass production for C 3 plants (Marchese et al 2005).…”
