The aim of the study was to review the epidemiology, clinical profile and discuss the etiology, prognosis and treatment options in patients aged 60 years or older presenting with status epilepticus. We performed a systematic review involving studies published from 1996 to 2010, in Medline/PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library on line (Scielo), Latin-American and Caribbean Center of Health Sciences Information (Lilacs) databases and textbooks. Related articles published before 1996, when relevant for discussing epilepsy in older people, were also included. Several population studies had shown an increased incidence of status epilepticus after the age of 60 years. Status epilepticus is a medical and neurological emergency that is associated with high morbidity and mortality, and is a major concern in the elderly compared to the general population. Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment of convulsive status epilepticus are crucial to avoid brain injury and reduce the fatality rate in this age group.

Intellectual disability is a prevalent form of cognitive impairment, affecting 2–3% of the general population. It is a daunting societal problem characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. Intellectual disability is a clinically important disorder for which the etiology and pathogenesis are still poorly understood. Moreover, although tremendous progress has been made, pharmacological intervention is still currently non-existent and therapeutic strategies remain limited. Studies in humans have a very limited capacity to explain basic mechanisms of this condition. In this sense, animal models have been invaluable in intellectual disability investigation. Certainly, a great deal of the knowledge that has improved our understanding of several pathologies has derived from appropriate animal models. Moreover, to improve human health, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications. Translational research specifically aims at taking basic scientific discoveries and best practices to benefit the lives of people in our communities. In this context, the challenge that basic science research needs to meet is to make use of a comparative approach to benefit the most from what each animal model can tell us. Intellectual disability results from many different genetic and environmental insults. Taken together, the present review will describe several animal models of potential intellectual disability risk factors.

Results: 35 EEG were analyzed in 29 patients. Of these patients, 17-58.6% were male and 12-41.4% were female. In our study we found that the cerebrovascular accident was the clinical condition most often observed, corresponding to 28.5% (brain hemorrhagic stroke -17.1% and ischemic stroke -11.4%), followed by traumatic brain injury (17.1%), severe sepsis (17.1%), other causes (14.3%), toxic-metabolic encephalopathy (11.4%), and Status epilepticus (11.4%). Coma was present in (11.4%) and only 2.9% had EEG to assess post-PCR. We found a disorganized background activity (35 -100%), the asymmetrical pattern is found in 21 (60%) and symmetrical in 14 (40%) The presence of epileptiform discharges was identified in 12 (34.2%). A change of therapy occurred in 8 (22.9%) patients who underwent electroencephalographic examination.
