Russell body gastritis: case report

Abstract: Primeira submissão em 16/04/11 Última submissão em 29/10/11 Aceito para publicação em 05/12/11 Publicado em 20/02/12 Russell body gastritis (RBG), which can be associated with Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection, is a recently acknowledged lesion characterized by the presence of eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions in plasmacytes. Herein the authors discuss the morphological aspects of a case of RBG in a male patient with clinical complaint of epigastric pain. Upper endoscopy revealed areas of erythema/edem… Show more

“…An overall review of the cases with Russell body gastritis revealed that the majority appear to be associated with H. pylori infection [9,15,18]. This infection damages both superficial and crypto cells due to infiltration of interleukin-1, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and plasma cells, in addition to the production of cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factors that cause chronic gastritis [7]. Overstimulation of plasma cells by mucosal pathogens can result in a large amount of immunoglobulin [36].…”

“…In Russell body cervicitis, the plasma cells are filled with Russell bodies. This condition has also been reported in chronic inflammatory reactions due to its long-term antigenic stimulations, much as in chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis, as well as in neoplastic processes like plasmacytoma and B-cell lymphomas [7][8].…”

“…5 Pathogenesis includes an increased immunoglobulin secretion within the rough endoplasmic reticulum due to immune stimulation. 6 Both reactive and neoplastic (plasmacytoma and B cell lymphoma) conditions have been associated with similar morphology. 7 Russell body cervicitis is a rare inflammatory pathology in cervix, characterised by dense plasma cell rich infiltrate and variable number of mott cells.…”

“…Russell bodies, first reported by Russell in 1890, refer to the immunoglobulin-containing inclusions, made by abnormal secretion of plasma cells, characterized by the distended rough endoplasmic reticulum [1] . Such plasma cells are called "Mott cells" and can be seen in chronic inflammatory reactions with prolonged antigenic stimulation [2] , as in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis [3] in addition to neoplastic processes such as plasmacytoma and B-cell lymphomas [4] . This unusual pattern of inflammation has been described in some mucosal sites.…”
